Callum Howe sentenced to 16-years in prison for killing Shaan Rasul

A man who killed 22-year-old Shaan Rasul, attacking him with an axe at his home in Hartlepool has been jailed for 16 years, with five years on extended licence.

Callum Howe, 23, who was named as a dangerous offender by the Judge, now faces a lengthy prison sentence for causing the death of his childhood friend by hitting him multiple times in the head with a hatchet whilst Shaan was visiting Howe’s flat on Allerton Close in Hartlepool on the morning of Sunday 23rd November.

Mohammed Shaan Ali Rasul, 22, who was known to friends and family as Shaan, was found by emergency services inside of Howe’s flat on Allerton Close on the morning of Sunday 23 November, after neighbours had reported a disturbance at the address.

Howe was found guilty of manslaughter by a jury on Wednesday 10th June following a three-week trial at Teesside Crown Court.

The court heard how Shaan had stayed at Howe’s flat on Allerton Close overnight, on Saturday 22 November, along with another friend. The following morning, Howe was found stumbling around in the street after jumping from the window of the upstairs flat.

When police and paramedics arrived, Shaan was found with serious injuries. Despite the efforts of emergency services, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Howe was arrested and later charged with murder.

Detective Superintendent Chris Motson, who led the investigation, said: “Our thoughts remain firmly with Shaan’s family and loved ones, who have endured unimaginable pain and loss throughout this investigation and subsequent trial.

“This was a tragic and senseless incident which resulted in a young man losing his life. I would like to commend Shaan’s family and friends for the dignity and strength that they have shown throughout what has been an extremely difficult period.

“I would also like to thank the officers, staff and partner agencies involved in the investigation along with members of the public who came forward with information that assisted our enquiries.

“I am pleased that the Judge recognised Howe as a dangerous offender, and that he will not pose a danger to the public now that he is behind bars. He now has many years in prison to reflect on his actions, which led to the violent death of his friend.

“Whilst no sentence can ever undo the devastating impact of Shaan’s death on his family and friends, I hope that today’s outcome can offer some sense of closure to them.”

In a statement following Shaan's death, his sister said: “Our beloved brother Shaan. We can’t imagine the pain you suffered and can’t believe you are no longer here.

“You had the biggest heart a man could ever have, but our hearts are broken and heavy. We will love you forever, Our brother Shaan.”
