Between 6pm and 6.30pm a fire was started deliberately at a flat on Shelley Road.
It is believed an item was put through the letterbox or the window on the door where damage was caused.
The property was unoccupied at the time.
Officers have been in the area as they continue with their investigation.
PC Lewis, from Middlesbrough CID, said: “We believe a number of people were in the area at the time and may have information that could assist with our investigation.
“I want to take this opportunity to encourage those residents to come forward.
“I also want to appeal for any dash cam or doorbell footage that could be useful to us. Please get in touch either by calling 101 or visiting our website quoting reference number 114103.”
If reticent to come forward, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or visit their website.
